Basbousa with Almonds (Namoura) – Recipe
Basbousa with almonds, also known as Namoura, is a traditional Egyptian dessert that is also popular across Middle Eastern kitchens, especially in the Levant where it is widely known by the name Namoura.
This sweet treat is often served during special occasions, celebrations, and particularly in the month of Ramadan after iftar. Basbousa can be prepared with different fillings such as cream, chocolate, coconut, almonds, and more.
The base of basbousa is semolina, often combined with ingredients like vanilla and condensed milk, and it is soaked in sugar syrup right after baking. Today, we will learn how to prepare one of its delicious variations — Basbousa with Almonds.
Ingredients for Basbousa with Almonds (Namoura)
Serves 5–6 people

1 cup unsalted butter

1 can sweetened condensed milk (397 g)

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

2 cups semolina
-
½ cup peeled, ground almonds
For the syrup (sharbat):

2 cups sugar
-
3 cups water
-
Juice of ½ large lemon
-
¼ teaspoon vanilla
-
1 tablespoon rose water
-
2 tablespoons ground almonds
How to Prepare Basbousa with Almonds (Namoura)

Prepare the syrup first:
In a pot, combine 3 cups of water with 2 cups of sugar. Place on the stove until it boils. Add the lemon juice and let it simmer for a few minutes until slightly thickened. Then stir in the rose water and ground almonds. Set aside to cool completely. -
Prepare the basbousa mixture:
Bring all ingredients to room temperature before starting. In a medium bowl, mix together the butter and condensed milk until smooth. Add the baking powder and stir well.
Next, add the semolina and ground almonds, mixing thoroughly until well combined. -
Bake:
Transfer the mixture into a baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake at 190°C (375°F) for about 35 minutes, or until fully cooked and golden on top. -
Add the syrup:
Once out of the oven, immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot basbousa. Then place the pan in the refrigerator until it cools down completely. -
Serve:
Cut the basbousa into medium-sized squares or diamonds, sprinkle with some extra ground almonds, and serve with a cup of tea or any hot beverage.
