Khoshaf Ramadan – Recipe & Preparation Guide

Khoshaf is one of the most refreshing drinks enjoyed during the month of Ramadan, especially popular in Egypt. After long hours of fasting, the body needs hydration, and that’s why juices are considered essential throughout the holy month.

Khoshaf is one of the main drinks served at iftar in most Egyptian households. What makes it special is that it contains a variety of dried fruits, making it both a drink and a light dessert at the same time.

All the ingredients in khoshaf provide the body with essential nutrients and vitamins that are much needed after a long day of fasting. It’s definitely a drink worth trying, and today we’ll show you how to prepare it.


Ingredients for Khoshaf Ramadan

Serves 4–5 people

  • 1 ½ cups dried dates, pitted and halved

  • ¼ cup dried figs, chopped

  • ¼ cup dried apricots, chopped

  • ¼ cup dried prunes (dried plums)

  • 3 cups milk

  • 3 teaspoons grated coconut

  • 3 teaspoons raisins

  • A mix of assorted nuts (any available at home)

  • 4–5 tablespoons sugar, or to taste


How to Prepare Khoshaf Ramadan

  1. Cut the dates, prunes, apricots, and figs into medium-sized pieces.

  2. Soak the dates in a bowl of water for at least 6 hours.

  3. Soak the rest of the dried fruits for no less than 4 hours.

  4. Once soaking is complete, strain both the dates and dried fruits but keep the soaking water.

  5. Combine the dates and dried fruits in one bowl and mix well.

  6. Mix the date-soaking water with the fruit-soaking water, then sweeten with sugar to taste.

  7. Prepare serving glasses and distribute the khoshaf mixture evenly into them. Pour in the sweetened soaking water until it covers about half the glass.

  8. Fill the remaining half of each glass with milk.

  9. Garnish with raisins, grated coconut, and nuts on top.

  10. Place the glasses in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.

  11. Serve chilled and enjoy!
