Petit Four – Learn How to Make Petit Four – Cooking Tutorial

Petit four is a type of delicious dessert often prepared for Eid at the end of Ramadan.

Though popular in the Arab world during celebrations, petit four actually originates from French cuisine, where it is a classic and beloved treat.

It is made from ghee, powdered sugar, eggs, baking powder, vanilla, and flour — and sometimes cocoa is added. Petit four is enjoyed as a light snack between meals or as a sweet treat with a cup of tea or hot coffee.

It is served mainly during holidays and special occasions, and it comes in both sweet and savory variations.

Ingredients

Petit Four

Serves 5–6 people

  • 3 cups flour

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 1 ½ cups ghee (or butter)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  • 1 tablespoon baking powder

Preparation Method

  1. Sift the flour well, and make sure all ingredients are at room temperature at least 10 minutes before starting.

  2. In a bowl, mix the ghee with powdered sugar. Beat until the sugar is completely dissolved.

  3. Add the eggs and vanilla, mixing again.

  4. In a separate bowl, mix the flour and baking powder, then gradually add them to the wet mixture.

  5. Knead well until the dough becomes soft and smooth.

  6. Optionally, set aside a small portion of the dough and add 2 tablespoons of cocoa powder to make chocolate petit four. If you prefer, keep the dough plain.

  7. Place the dough into a piping bag (not a petit four machine, as this dough is too soft for that) and shape the cookies onto a baking tray.

  8. Place the tray on the middle rack of the oven and bake at 170°C (340°F) for about 20 minutes, or until done.

  9. Remove from the oven and let the petit four cool completely before transferring to a serving plate, as they are delicate and may break while hot.

Serve and enjoy!
