Qatayef Ramadan – Recipe & Cooking Tutorial
In just a few days, the holy month of Ramadan will begin. One of the essential traditions after iftar is enjoying desserts. Each country has its own popular sweets, but all share one thing in common: their delightful taste.
In Egypt, Ramadan is especially famous for Qatayef and Kunafa. Sweet shops sell them throughout the month, but many families prefer preparing them at home to save money and ensure cleanliness.
Qatayef are usually stuffed with a mix of nuts, soaked in sugar syrup, and enjoyed with a cup of tea.
Ingredients for Qatayef Ramadan
Serves 5–6 people
-
1 cup flour
-
3 cups water
-
1 egg
-
1 tablespoon fresh yeast
-
¼ teaspoon sugar
For the filling:
-
A mixture of raisins, sugar, grated coconut, and assorted nuts
How to Prepare Qatayef Ramadan
-
In a small cup of warm water, dissolve the sugar and yeast. Stir well and leave until it ferments.
-
In a medium bowl, place the flour and egg. Add the fermented yeast mixture and the rest of the water. Mix everything together until you get a smooth batter.
-
Cover the batter with a cloth and let it rest for at least 1 hour to rise.
-
Heat a skillet with a little oil over low heat. Pour a spoonful of batter into the center and gently spread it into a small circle.
-
Repeat the process until all the batter is used.
-
Once the bottom cooks, bubbles will appear on the surface — this means the qatayef is done. Remove from the skillet immediately.
-
For the filling, mix grated coconut, raisins, nuts, and sugar in a bowl.
-
Stuff each qatayef with the filling, then press the edges to seal tightly.
-
Heat oil in a deep pan and fry the qatayef until golden brown.
-
Drain well, then soak in sugar syrup.
-
Serve warm on a plate with a cup of tea — and Ramadan Kareem!
