Syrian Semsemiyyeh – Recipe & Preparation Method
Syrian Semsemiyyeh is a traditional sweet widely known across the Levant, and especially in Syria, where it is commonly made during holidays and joyful occasions, most notably the celebration of the Prophet’s Birthday (Mawlid al-Nabawi).
This popular treat is loved by people of all ages—children adore its sweetness, while adults enjoy it for both its flavor and its nostalgic cultural value.
The origins of Semsemiyyeh trace back to Ottoman cuisine. Turkish pilgrims, while passing through the Levant, introduced it to the local population, who later perfected it in their own kitchens.
In some areas, it is still called Mawlid Sweets because of its strong association with this religious festivity.
The sweet is made primarily from sesame seeds, and it inherits most of its health benefits from them.
Among its notable health benefits: it helps reduce dizziness, eases tinnitus (ringing in the ears), supports eye health, and prevents blurred vision. It is also believed to reduce the risk of strokes and arteriosclerosis, thus protecting heart health.
Thanks to its high fiber content, Semsemiyyeh aids digestion, softens the stomach, prevents constipation, and supports overall gut health. Nursing mothers are often advised to consume it, as it is thought to enhance milk production.
Ingredients (Serves 4):
-
2 cups sesame seeds
-
1 cup sugar
-
½ teaspoon cardamom powder (optional, for added flavor)
Preparation Method:
-
Caramelize the sugar: Place the sugar in a pot over heat and let it melt until it turns lightly golden.
-
Add sesame seeds: Gradually add the sesame seeds, stirring constantly until the mixture becomes sticky and well combined.
-
Flavoring: Remove from heat and stir in the cardamom powder for a unique aroma. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
-
Shape the sweets:
-
Method 1: Roll the mixture into small balls, then flatten each into round or oval shapes.
-
Method 2: Spread the hot mixture into a greased tray, smooth the surface, and cut it into squares or rectangles while still warm.
-
-
Cool and serve: Leave the pieces to cool and harden, then place them on a serving plate and enjoy.
Important Note: The cutting must be done quickly before the mixture hardens. To preserve freshness, store the sweets in plastic wrap or an airtight container to prevent moisture from affecting them.
